Guardians breathe sigh of relief as Lively avoids serious injury in 5-0 win
Cleveland's ace pitcher exits early with ankle sprain
Cleveland Guardians fans let out a collective sigh of relief on Tuesday night as ace pitcher Shane Lively exited Tuesday night's game with an ankle sprain and not a more serious injury.
Lively, who is 3-1 with a 2.50 ERA this season, left the game in the fourth inning after rolling his ankle covering first base on a ground ball. He was replaced by Sam Hentges, who threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
The Guardians went on to win the game 5-0, thanks in part to a three-run homer by Jose Ramirez in the fifth inning.
After the game, Guardians manager Terry Francona said that Lively's injury is not considered serious and that he is day-to-day.
"He rolled his ankle pretty good," Francona said. "But he's feeling better already. We'll see how he is tomorrow, but I don't think it's anything long-term."
The Guardians are scheduled to face the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. It is not yet known if Lively will be able to start that game.
